Episode 63: Rethinking Clogged Ducts + Mastitis: How Therapeutic Ultrasound Supports Healing for Nursing Moms
In today’s episode, we’re diving into a tool we both use in our clinics that more nursing moms deserve to know about: therapeutic ultrasound for clogged ducts and mastitis.
According to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s Clinical Protocol #36 (revised in 2022), therapeutic ultrasound may be an effective treatment for conditions within the mastitis spectrum. When used early (and really at the first sign of a clogged duct) this modality can make a HUGE difference!
During mastitis, ultrasound helps shift the environment in the tissue by decreasing inflammatory processes and supporting the body’s natural healing response. The earlier we intervene, the better the outcome tends to be.
We also talk through practical do’s and don’ts if you’re dealing with a clogged duct (some may surprise you). As always, we want you to know that there are supportive, evidence-informed tools available. You don’t have to just “power through” this alone!
Whether you’re a mom navigating your breastfeeding journey, or a provider wanting to better support your patients, we hope this episode feels both enlightening AND empowering!
